India Pale Ales (IPAs) were created by the British in the 19th Century when the Crown ruled almost half the world. An enterprising merchant decided that it was a waste to send empty ships to the colonies in order to import their produce back to the UK. His first attempt at exporting ales to the colonies (namely India) failed due to the length of the trip. Beer manufacturers added more hops to the beers and brewed beers of higher alcohol to help them stay fresh longer, and before you knew it, the IPA was born.
